Ants are a year-round nuisance on the Sunshine Coast, but they get much worse in the warmer months and after heavy rain. Storms flood nests in the lawn and garden, and within a day or two trails appear along kitchen benches, skirting boards and bathroom tiles. Some species also nest in wall cavities, pot plants and gaps in paving, which is why spraying the ants you can see rarely solves the problem.

After the visit, try not to wipe away the bait or use household sprays on the trails, because the ants need to carry the bait back to the nest. You may see more ants for a few days before numbers drop. Keep benches wiped down, rinse drink containers before they go in the recycling bin and trim plants that touch the walls. Pet food bowls left out overnight are another common draw.
